Walt Zane Gut
Art Exhibition by Regina Zimlichman
Adi Gallery at the Shazar Community Center, 30 Shmuel Yavne'eli St, Givatayim
Curator: Dvora Bochman
Regina Zimlichman was born in 1920 in the town of Pinsk in Poland. She speaks Hebrew, Yiddish, Polish, English, French and Russian. In her youth Zimlichman wished to emigrate to Israel and was a member of Gordonia and the Union, but the parents did not allow her to do so. As a child, during the Second World War she had to flee to Kyrgyzstan where she became a refugee and was forced to work in a weapons factory. But she, her brother Simha and her three sisters Bronia, Yocha and Mina survived the Holocaust. After the war, she met her husband Herman in the city of Stettin (in Polish Szczecin), where her family lived and the two married in 1950.

In 1957 she sailed to Israel via Italy and came to Israel with her husband and two children: Clara and Naphtali. Edith her third child was born in Israel. As new immigrants, they arrived in Be'er Sheva and lived in Dimona for two years. Herman's rich uncle bought an apartment for them in Givatayim, where Regina has lived since 1958 and to this day. In Poland, women did not work outside the house, but in Israel Regina worked as a seamstress and as a kindergarten teacher. She was widowed 13 years ago. Her three children, her eight grandchildren, her four great-grandchildren make her happy.

The artistic gift runs in the family. Zimlichman’s sister Mina Gampel is a well-known painter and painting teacher in Germany at the Esslingen am Necka University. Edith Garciani, Zimlichman’s younger daughter who grew up and lived in Givatayim, has studied in the drawing circles of Itzik Adi. Garciani’s solo exhibition was held in 2000 at the Shazar House in the Adi Gallery, which was named for him in his memory, and the children donated to them were given cystic fibrosis.

Zimlichman started drawing three years after her husband passed away and she has been participating in art courses of the city of Givatayim for the last ten years. The artist Rivka Rosenthal was her first teacher in the painting class at the Beit Rishonim club in Givatayim. After about five years, Zimlichman continued to draw in the painting class at the Alon Pensioner Club run by Dalia Harel. Most of the art instructors there were "immigrants" from the Soviet Union. She regularly paints in the Nili Kashani’s painting class.

Her diligence, her concentration and her skills are prominent, and indeed the talent of painting that was revealed was a pleasant surprise and an added peace and joy in her life. Zimlichman selects her subjects from television and various magazines. After reading articles which particularly impressed her, she makes use of accompanying photographs, enlarges them and then they become a private iconography of her lost childhood.

Her style of work is intuitive and direct. The varied paintings excel in their simplicity and their propensity for primitive art, naïve art and children's paintings. These art streams are characterized by paintings that match a child's perspective, are easy to understand and interpret, are executed in light and vital colors in a figurative style.

She expresses in her paintings her positive and optimistic worldview and illuminate’s reality and daily events. True to this style of work, Zimlichman emphasizes contours, most of the characters in her paintings lack volume, she does not maintain a perspective or use of light and shade to create three-dimensional, has no interest in proper proportions and anatomy and most of her paintings do not engage in composition.

There are three main themes that concern the artist:

Landscape paintings in which imaginary and realistic places are discovered, as well as sights from the past such as: a Russian landscape in an orange sliver; a village with a water station; a colorful street and green houses in the village; a hike in nature and a picture of a blue kingfisher on a yellow background. The sea is reflected in works dealing with the city on the shore of a lake in Yugoslavia; a sea view with boats; boats anchored in a pier; a pair of ducks in water and water plants near a lake and a boat.

still life paintings such as: flowers with white pieces and Egyptian writing; a spring fruit basket; a table view; orange flowers in a jar; combined dishes and so on.

Portraits such as: are a gray woman; an Egyptian king; a noble woman watching; a praying Jew; a portrait of a handsome maiden; a girl with a pink hat and more. Here Zimlichman draws various characters from around the world who referencing painting styles from the East and the history of art history.

During her previous exhibition, a book was presented which included diary entries from the life of her dear departed husband, Herman. In it he detailed episodes of his health condition and documented the past so as not to be forgotten. Zimlichman noticed that the writing had done him good, so she would ask him to continue writing without her intervention.

Between the pain and the reckoning with those who have been wronged, difficult periodical images of poverty, orphanhood, war, hatred of Jews, injury, expulsion and murder, transit to Russia, camps and imprisonment, hunger, communism, military service, escape and more.

The title of the exhibition "Good Will" is derived from Zimlichman’s optimistic and hopeful qualities despite her challenges.

Zimlichman, 87, has also exhibited in group exhibitions and is will to continue to provide the world with the artworks she creates with her ten fingers.
